Wonky Kitchens at Cambridge Blue

Jay is cooking up a storm at the Blues

Have you heard the news yet? There is a new kitchen takeover at one of the best beer pubs in Cambridge, the Cambridge Blue on Gwydir Street.

Wonky Kitchens kicked off last Monday, 15 July, with a bang, and it is just what this Multi-CAMRA-Award-Winning Freehouse pub needed. Great, easy-going food to pair with the wide range of drinks they offer.

About the Cambridge Blue

This iconic pub on Gwydir Street is one of Cambridge’s enduring institutions, with many generations of happy customers.

Cambridge Blue is Cambridge’s Real Ale Paradise, offering up to 14 real ales, 12 keg beers and 7 real ciders at any one time. You’ll find it a challenge to find something you don’t like here!

That’s not all, as they have also made a name with their array of gins and other spirits (and one of the largest whisky collections in the city), along with our three fridges filled with hundreds of Belgian beers of all styles.

Jay and Leah, the locals behind Wonky Kitchens

About Wonky Kitchens

Wonky Kitchens is the brainchild of Leah and Jay. If you are a frequent visitor of local pubs and Mill Road Butchers, you might have bumped into Jay.

He began working as a kitchen porter in Cambridge pubs at a young age, before heading off to Australia. He really enjoyed his time down south, but when the pandemic hit the world, life changed. He wasn’t able to travel back home, so he was stuck in Sidney for a while. Of course, there are worse things in life living in such a stunning city, but in the end he decided to return to Cambridge.

Instead of starting work as a chef on his return, he worked at Mill Road Butchers for a while. However, his heart was in creating delicious food, so he was back behind the stove again at the Cambridge Brewhouse. Jethro, the owner of the Cambridge Blue, approached him to take over the kitchen at the Cambridge Blue and Jay and Leah are very excited about this opportunity and have chosen his suppliers with care.

The special pies of the week can be served with mash or chips

About the menu

Simple and good! The menu includes ciabattas with house-cured pastrami and bacon, as well as a non-meat option of tofu.

For the bar snacks, homemade sausage rolls, Scotch eggs, and sharing boards. Three different mains: Burgers, pies, sausage and mash and soon there will be a special of the week too.

The sides are pretty awesome: Birria beef-loaded fries, chips, fried corn, and homemade coleslaw. Keep an eye out on social media as Jay will be serving specials on Sundays!

And what about the pudding? Yes, they also serve delicious sweet treats! Their monthly changing dessert menu includes this month a Biscoff brownie and a brownie Scotch egg, which is a brownie mix wrapped around a creme egg. Now, that’s one to try out!

These Birria beef-loaded fries are incredibly morish

Our review

The Cambridge Blue is always a good place to have a drink, not just for a good beer, but also for a nice glass of wine, a G&T, or a whisky.

We ordered the chicken burger, the pie of the week and Birria beef-loaded fries. When the food arrived, we thought we wouldn’t finish the loaded chips, as there was a lot of food. I have to confess that we almost licked the plate as the loaded chips were amazing!

My husband loved the pie, and according to him, it was one of the best he has had. Delicious pastry filled with chicken, mushroom and house-cured bacon served with mash and perfectly cooked broccoli. I am not a fan of burgers, but the fried chicken burger had a delicious crunch and was served with chilli jam, pickled hot peppers, cheese, skin on fries and fennel and beetroot slaw. The fennel gave it a very nice though.
