New sister bistro to Restaurant 22

Neighbourhood restaurant Margaret’s is all about local

Last week, we joined one of the soft launch events at Margaret’s in Chesterton, the sister restaurant of the Michelin starred Restaurant 22.

The owners, Sam and Alex, were keen to open a modern British bistro in Cambridge, showcasing local producers in a more relaxed setting. Margaret’s on Chesterton Road will open its doors on Thursday 12th June. Booking recommended to avoid disappointment.

Margaret’s ticks all the boxes

Times are changing, and diners now want more flexibility. Not just in offering, but also in the way we eat out. It’s all about having a good experience, from fine dining to more affordable and laid-back settings, while still enjoying the finer things in life. Part of this is having the flexibility to opt for an excellent glass of wine or a carefully crafted cocktail instead of a bottle of wine.

Margaret’s has it all! Not only can you be assured of fantastic food created by Michelin Star chefs, but also a good selection of wines by the glass and fine cocktails, which can be served as mocktails, too. A special mention goes to Margaret’s Gin, created by Vaults Distillery. This dry gin comes highly recommended. By me!

Margaret’s is the perfect place to meet up with friends or family for a relaxed lunch, dinner, date night, or Sunday Lunch. Once the team has settled in, they will be open 7 days per week, for lunch and dinner.

It’s all about local

The set menu offers small plates in the evening for before the main and at lunch time a starter to kickstart the meal. The menu showcases locally sourced ingredients celebrating a range of brilliant suppliers. Sustainability is very important to Alex and Sam and they plan each dish carefully to make the most of every ingredient and keep waste to a minimum. It’s a menu that reflects the time of year, supports local growers and makers, and offers a delicious way to dine.

Farm to table

Margaret’s has been a massive project for the team whilst running one of the top restaurants in England, but they haven’t finished yet! Next will be their farm-to-table project. The team at Margaret’s will create an area in their back garden where they can grow some of their produce in polytunnels.

The perfect finish to dinner

A glass of fine port or vermouth, anyone? Or would you rather have an Old Fashioned with some Madeleines on the side? It’s the perfect way to round up a lovely meal at Margaret’s.

About the team

Who are the creative minds behind this new neighbourhood bistro? Sam Carter and Alex Oliver, the creators of the award-winning Michelin-starred Restaurant 22 in Chesterton, Cambridge. Restaurant 22 was a well-known restaurant in Cambridge for almost 30 years, and Sam and Alex took over the reins in February 2018. Restaurant 22 was awarded a Michelin Star in 2023.

Margaret’s is a modern British bistro, almost next door to Restaurant 22 in Chesterton, north of the River Cam.

Decor

Cosy and stylish is the best way to describe the interior of Margaret’s. I love the small booths for two where you can have an intimate dinner for two, and they can accommodate groups up to 8. The bar along the window is not only perfect for seating for 2, but also for the solo diner, which is gaining a lot in popularity these days.
