Hamlet – from Shakespeare at The George

June 25 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

Shakespeare at The George’s open-air summer production for 2024 will be Hamlet, directed by Lynne Livingstone.

The atmospheric courtyard of The George Hotel in Huntingdon will become a Danish castle when it is transformed into the Court of Denmark in Elsinore as we follow the fortunes of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, and his family.

For anyone who is not familiar with the story of Hamlet, they will find mystery and conspiracy in abundance and a great Shakespearian tragedy punctuated with dark humour in which the characters weave an intricate web of intrigue.

Welcome to Elsinore, Denmark, where ghosts walk the earth, murder is committed, and a Prince must avenge his dead father. The battle between one man’s nature, conscience, and the weight of a father’s expectations, that sets in motion a train of events that will end in tragedy.

The open-air season of Hamlet will run from Tuesday 25th June to Saturday 6th July marking the first time it has been performed in the town for over 30 years, and is generously sponsored by Urban and Civic. Although there is no performance on Sunday 30th June an additional 2pm show has been added to the performance schedule on Saturday 29th June – the first time the company has included an afternoon matinee.

Our captioned performance will return on Tuesday 2nd July – helping make live theatre more accessible to those who have lost, or are losing, their hearing. Following the success of last year’s trial, we are also delighted to announce that we will be providing a Touch Tour prior to the show on Monday 1st July to help bring the experience to life for blind and partially sighted theatre fans.
